Most Office Networks Were Never Designed

Why Your Signal Dies in the Back Room

Wi-Fi is a two-way conversation, and that single fact explains almost every coverage complaint. Your access point has a big antenna and plenty of power; a phone or laptop has neither. So a device can hear the network perfectly, show full bars, and still crawl, because the access point cannot hear the device replying. Bars measure what is reaching you, not what is getting back.

Buildings make it worse in ways people underestimate. Block walls, brick, metal shelving, commercial refrigeration, and old plaster with wire lath all absorb signal aggressively. A single router in the front office covers the front office well and everything behind two block walls poorly, no matter what the box promised on the shelf.

Range extenders are the instinctive fix and usually the wrong one. An extender talks to the router over the same radio it uses to talk to your devices, roughly halving throughput, and it typically creates a second network name that devices cling to long after walking past it.
