DTSB Accident Data

Fresh NTSB accident reports, pulled automatically and delivered for review.

A scheduled pipeline that pulls general aviation accident records from the NTSB’s public data API twice a day and delivers new fatal-accident reports to the DTSB for review, with no one checking by hand.

The challenge

The DTSB tracks general aviation accident data, which means keeping up with a steady flow of new preliminary and final reports from federal investigators.

Checking for new reports by hand is slow and easy to miss, and the raw government data is messy: inconsistent registrations, case numbers, and placeholder values make it hard to match against the DTSB’s own records.

What we built

We built an automated pipeline that runs on a schedule twice a day. It sweeps the NTSB’s public accident database for newly completed investigations and newly posted preliminary reports and keeps a local, deduplicated copy so unchanged records are skipped.

New Part 91 fatal-accident finals and preliminaries are filtered out and delivered to the DTSB for review, with the probable cause or preliminary narrative quoted word for word. On a quiet day nothing is sent. We also reconciled the DTSB’s existing accident records against the federal data to flag cases whose status had changed.

Key features

Scheduled, hands-off sync

A scheduled job runs twice a day, so new investigation reports reach the DTSB within hours of being published.

Finals and preliminaries

Sweeps both newly completed investigations and open cases with fresh preliminary reports, tracked separately.

Deduplicated local mirror

Every case is stored once and content-hashed, so re-runs are safe and only genuine changes count as updates.

Targeted filtering

Only the reports the DTSB reviews, fatal general aviation (Part 91) accidents, are selected for delivery.

Verbatim delivery

Each report goes out with the tail number and the official probable cause or narrative quoted word for word, ready to review.

Record reconciliation

Forgiving matching on registrations and case numbers flagged where the DTSB’s own records had fallen behind the federal data.
