The Murray Sentinel

Calloway County’s nonprofit newsroom, with email we run and obituaries that arrive on their own.

We host The Murray Sentinel’s email and run an automated pipeline that watches local funeral home websites, catches new and updated obituaries, and publishes them as a feed straight into the Sentinel’s website.

The challenge

The Murray Sentinel is a nonprofit newsroom covering Murray and Calloway County. Obituaries matter enormously to local readers, but they are posted across several funeral home websites on no fixed schedule.

Checking those sites by hand several times a day takes time a small newsroom does not have, and funeral homes often post a brief death notice first and replace it with the full obituary a day or more later at the same address.

What we built

We built a pipeline that checks local funeral home websites four times a day with polite, rate-limited requests. It detects new obituaries and, by fingerprinting each page’s content, notices when a notice is replaced with the full write-up or otherwise edited.

A clean RSS feed delivers obituaries straight into the Sentinel’s website platform: one entry per person, refreshed in place when the full obituary lands, so readers always see the latest version. We also host the Sentinel’s business email.

Key features

Scheduled monitoring

Funeral home websites are checked four times a day, with randomized delays so the pipeline is a good neighbor to those sites.

Change detection

Each obituary is content-fingerprinted, so edits and the switch from a brief notice to a full obituary are caught automatically.

RSS feed for the website

A standards-compliant RSS feed feeds the Sentinel’s website platform directly, built to the platform team’s exact requirements.

One entry per obituary

Each person appears once in the feed, always showing the latest version, with the original posting date kept stable.

Business email hosting

The newsroom’s email runs on infrastructure we host and support locally.

Technology

  • Python scraping pipeline
  • Scheduled jobs (cron)
  • Content fingerprinting
